Explanation

The external frame of the No.1 Internal Medicine Ward, which was built in 1932, survived the explosion. However, the internal structure was burnt out.
On the 28th April 1949, Emperor Showa visited Nagasaki and stood on this rooftop and surveyed the destruction, before speaking with Dr. Takashi Nagai who lay in a bed in the second floor corridor (Nishi Nippon Shinbun, 24th January 1989).
The building was demolished in 1989.
